Bachelor of Arts, (Honours) in Urdu is an undergraduate course in Urdu literature/language and is provided by many colleges of Delhi University. These are:-

  1. Zakir Husain College, J.N. Maarg, DU
  2. Kirori Mal College, North Campus, DU
  3. Satyawai College, Ashok Vihar, DU

Course Details: It’s a 3-year full-time programme consisting 6 semesters i.e. 2 semesters/year.

Eligibility


A candidate needs to complete his/her Higher Secondary i.e. 10+2 in any discipline from a recognized college or Board.

There will be an entrance exam to get admission to these colleges whose purpose is to check candidates’ basic knowledge of Urdu language and its syllabus would be based on whatever you have read till 12th class.

Semester 1

Study of prose and poetic form of Urdu literature (Art and Short History), Introduction to Persian/ Study of modern prose/ Study of progressive poetry (Optional), Study of art, history of prose form, Concurrent- Qualifying language

Semester 2

Persian prose and poetry/ Study of medieval prose, Study of modern Nazm/ Ghazal (Optional), Special study of literary movements, Concurrent- Credit language

Semester 3

Special study of Premchand as a short story writer/ Special study of Rajinder Singh Bedi as a short story writer/ Special study of woman short story writer (Optional), Study of modern literary movements, Concurrent- Interdisciplinary

Semester 4

Special study of a poet (Gazal)- Mir Taqi Mir/ Special study of a poet (Gazal)- Ghalib (Optional), Study of classical prose and poetry, Concurrent- Discipline Centered I

Semester 5

Study of Medieval poetry, Study of prose from Afsana/ Study of prose from Drama (Optional), Study of development of Urdu language and Literature, Study of print media and journalism

Semester 6

Study of mass media (Electronics), Special study of Art of News Reporting, Detail study of Iqbal/ Detail study of Sahibi (Optional), Concurrent- Discipline centered II

Fee Structure


It depends on the college’s norms. Generally, it’s around 9000/- course but the range could vary with time.

Scope


There are many future scopes/aspects that you can choose from, after having a B.A. (Hons.) degree in Urdu Language. The main sectors are:

Academics (You can pursue higher studies like M.A in Urdu language, M. Phil. in Urdu language, Ph.D. in Urdu Language etc.), Journalism, Language Dept. of any institution or organization, Translating and Interpreting to Urdu language in various Islamic Study Centers.

2 lakh per annum to 6 lakh per annum

Jobs and Career Opportunities


There are various career opportunities after completing B.A (Hons.) in the Urdu Language. You can work as:

Urdu Teacher, Urdu Translator in Indian Embassy, Data Entry clerk in Urdu Language, Content Writer, Urdu language analyst or Content analyst (You can correct or edit the contents of others that are in the Urdu language). Other than these, you can provide tuition facilities in Urdu language or can search for any Customer Care Job which needs Urdu speaking people.

You can also be a Language Specialist or expert in various media institutions. Some are News18, Aljazeera, DD Urdu, CNN, BBC etc.
