In the following question two equations are given. You have to solve these equations and determine relation between x and y.

I. x2 – 26x – 56 = 0

II. y2 + 35y + 66 = 0

1). x < y
2). x > y
3). x = y OR the relationship cannot be determined
4). x ≥ y

I. x2 – 26x – 56 = 0

⇒ x2 – 28x + 2x – 56 = 0

⇒ x(x – 28) + 2(x – 28) = 0

⇒ (x – 28)(x + 2) = 0

Then, x = + 28 or x = - 2

II. y2 + 35y + 66 = 0

⇒ y2 + 33y + 2y + 66 = 0

⇒ y(y + 33) + 2(y + 33) = 0

⇒ (y + 33)(y + 2) = 0

Then, y = - 33 or y = - 2

So, when x = + 28, x > y for y = - 33 and x > y for y = - 2

And when x = - 2, x > y for y = - 33 and x = y for y = - 2

∴ So, we can clearly observe that x ≥ y.
