Suppose N pipes have a rate of flow of 4 liters per minute.

⇒ Remaining (7 – N) pipes have a rate of flow of 11 liters per minute.

It takes a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes to fill the tank if all pipes are opened, i.e, 100 minutes.

⇒ [4N + 11(7 – N)] × 100 = 4200

⇒ (77 – 7N) = 42

⇒ N = 35/7 = 5

∴ 5 pipes have a rate of flow of 4 liters per minute.
