A man and a boy received Rs. 800 as wages for 5 days for the work they did together. The man’s efficiency in the work was three times that of the boy. What are the 1 day wages for the boy?
Let the boy take ‘x’ days to finish the work alone.
⇒ boy will complete 1/x amount of work in 1 day.
Given man’s efficiency is three times that of boy → man’s 1 day’s work = 3 × (boy’s 1 day’s work)
⇒ Man’s 1 day’s work = 3 × (1/x) = 3/x
Now, Both complete the work together in 5 days → they complete 1/5th of work in 1 day.
⇒ (1/x) + (3/x) = 1/5
⇒ 4/x = 1/5 ⇒ x = 20.
∴ boy does 1/20 of work in a day and man does 3/20 of work in a day.
⇒ Boy’s wage per day = (1/20) × 800 = Rs 40
