The second paragraph ends by discussing the superstitions considered in India with regard to menstruation. The blank (C) seeks a word that highlights this problem.

A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to compare two things which are not alike. Here, the sentence makes no such comparison. Thus, option 1 can be eliminated.

A cliché is a phrase (or an idea) which has been used so much that it is no longer interesting or effective. This word can also mean stereotype. It is not suitable for the sentence. Hence, we can eliminate option 3 as well.

Anomaly does not fit the context as it means something that is different from what is expected.

Taboo is a social custom to avoid talking about a particular subject or to avoid doing some activity. When used, it means that the women in India are fighting against the taboos and superstitions associated with menstruation. This makes contextual sense.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 4.
