I. 12x2 + 5x – 3 = 0

⇒ 12x2 + 9x – 4x – 3 = 0

⇒ 3x(4x + 3) – 1(4x + 3) = 0

⇒ (4x + 3)(3x – 1) = 0

⇒ x = -3/4, 1/3

II. 12y2 – 17y + 6 = 0

⇒ 12y2 – 8y – 9y + 6 = 0

⇒ 4y(3y – 2) – 3(3y – 2) = 0

⇒ (3y – 2)(4y – 3) = 0

⇒ y = 2/3, 3/4

When x = -3/4, y = 2/3, then x < y

When x = -3/4, y = 3/4, then x < y

When x = 1/3, y = 2/3, then x < y

When x = 1/3, y = 3/4, then x < y

∴ x and y are related as x < y
