In the following question, a short passage is given with one of the lines in the passage missing and represented by a blank. Select the best out of the five answer choices given, to make the passage complete and coherent.

From an individual perspective, one needs adequate literacy skills to participate and function happily within – and contribute to – one’s communities. For new-comers to Canada, adequate English language skills are essential to forming friendships, without which they are susceptible to isolation, loneliness and anxiety. Persons with adequate literacy skills maintain better health through their ability to understand and interpret health information. __________.They are also better able to communicate with their children’s teachers and to help their children with school work. From a collective perspective, a literate community is a dynamic community; a community that exchanges ideas, engages in dialogue is more innovative and productive.

1). The sharing of ideas, perspectives and concerns also leads to greater levels of mutual understanding and caring, and ultimately strong community spirit.
2). Whenever we hear from learners that they have been promoted at work, we know another business has benefited from our service.
3). Consequently, there is a growing mismatch between the skills that employers need and the skills that workers have
4). They are better able to communicate clearly with their medical caregivers, learn and adopt preventive health practices and detect problems so that they can be treated earlier, or make appropriate choices amongst health care options.

The first step is to read the passage carefully. After reading, we can give a quick second reading of the paragraph to pick up the clues that will help us to find the correct answer. The most helpful clue in this question is the sentence following the blank immediately : ‘They are also better able to communicate with their children’s teachers…’ The use of are also indicates that the sentence in the blank provides a similar context. It is highly probable that the sentence discusses the advantages of efficient literacy. They refers to the people enjoying these advantages.

Keeping this in mind, we find that option 4 provides a sentence which is suitably substantiated by adding additional information in the subsequent sentence. (They are better … They are also better…). The context is also relevant to the paragraph.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 4.
