The four variable factors are to be considered in connection with specifying a concrete mix proportioning are:

  1. Water – cement Ratio
  2. Cement – Aggregate Ratio
  3. Gradation of the Aggregate
  4. Consistency

The effort in proportioning is to use a minimum amount of paste that will lubricate the mass while fresh and after hardening will bind the aggregate particles together and fill the space between them.

In order to avoid problem like shrinkage, etc. good mix proportion can be achieved by minimizing the voids by good gradation.
