Protest is to express or declare disapproval and dissent.

Thronged means to be present in great numbers.

Boycotted means to refuse to cooperate with or participate or refuse to buy something.

Swarmed means to move somewhere in large numbers.

Angered means to cause someone to be angry.

Cross means to go or extend across or to the other side.

Thus, both B and D make the sentence meaningful.

Thus option 1 is the correct answer.
