A train has an average speed of 50km/hr over 150 km and it travels at variable speed throughout its journey. The train travels slowest when it crosses a platform with a constant speed. The train is 100m long and the platform is 1250 m long. If the train takes 10minutess to cross the platform, what is the speed of the train during the rest of the journey?
1). 52.5 km/hr
2). 60 km/hr
3). 54.3 km/hr
4). 63.5 km/hr
Total distance travelled by train to cross the platform = 1250 m = 1.25 km
Total distance travelled by train for the journey = 150km
Total time taken = 150/50 = 3 hours
Time taken to cross the platform = 10 minutes = 1/6 hr
Distance except the platform = 150 – 1.25 = 148.75 km
Time taken for the rest of the journey = 3 – 1/6 = 17/6 hr
∴ Speed during the rest of the journey = 148.75 × 6 / 17 = 52.5 km/hr
