The correct phrase replacement is 'option 3', i.e. 'was very interested'.

As it is mentioned in the sentence that the expert recommended the candidate as an employee, it is clear that 'option 1' and 'option 2' are totally incorrect and 'option 4' is a grammatically incorrect phrase. Thus, the correct phrase replacement should be 'was very interested'.
