Let Upstream speed = x

∴ Downstream speed = x2

Speed of the boat = (x2 + x)/2

Speed of the river = (x2 – x)/2

Ratio of the speed of the boat and river = (x2 + x) / (x2 – x) = (x + 1) / (x – 1)

Maximum possible value for x = 2

∴ Ratio of the speed of the boat and river 3 : 1
