Let the speed of boat in still water be x km/hr and the speed of current be y km/hr.

Case1 - Upstream(Speed of Boat when travelling against the stream = x - y)

Speed = Distance/Time

⇒ x - y = 8/2 = 4 km/hr ----(1)

Case2 - Downstream(Speed of Boat when travelling with the stream = x + y)

Speed = Distance/Time

⇒ x + y = 12/1.5 = 8 km/hr ----(2)

By solving eq. (1) and eq. (2), we get

⇒ x = 6 km/hr and y = 2 km/hr

Hence, the speed of current = 2 km/hr
