Let the distance between A and B be ‘x’ km

Downstream speed = speed of boat + speed of current

∴ Downstream speed = 12 kmph

Upstream speed = speed of boat – speed of current

∴ Upstream speed = 4 kmph

Total time taken = time taken in upstream + time taken in downstream

But we know that

Time  = (Distance )/speed

$(\therefore \;4\; = \;\frac{x}{4} + \;\frac{x}{12} = \frac{{x}}{3})$

∴ x = 12 km

Thus the distance between A and B is 12 km
