A man swim at 6 km per hour velocity in still water. He takes 90 minutes to swim from position A to the position B and back in a river when it is flowing at 2 km per hour. The distance between A and B is
1). 6 km
2). 5 km
3). 4 km
4). 3 km
Time = distance/speed
Given,
Velocity of the man in still water = 6 km/hr
Velocity of flow = 2 km/hr
∴ Velocity of man in the direction of flow = (6 + 2) km/hr = 8 km/hr
Velocity of man in the direction opposite to flow = (6 - 2) km/hr = 4 km/hr
Let, The distance between A and B is x km
Given, He takes 90 minutes to swim from position A to the position B and back in a river
∴ (x/8) + (x/4) = 90 minutes = 1 hour and 30 minutes = 1.50 hours
⇒ (x/8) + (x/4) = 1.50
⇒ 9x/24 = 1.50
⇒ 9x = 36
⇒ x = 4 km
