The sum of the ages of Ram and Shyam is 49. The difference between the age of Shyam and twice the age of Ram is 8. What is the age (in years) of Ram?

The sum of the ages of Ram and Shyam is 49. The difference between the age of Shyam and twice the age of Ram is 8. What is the age (in years) of Ram?
1). 30
2). 20
3). 19
4). 29

Solution : 

Let us take Ram's age as 'x' and Shyam's age as 'y'.

Given:

Sum of Ram's and Shyam's age is 49.

x + y = 49 ---------> 1 

The difference between the age of Shyam and twice the age of Ram is 8

 2x - y = 8 ----------> 2 

Solving equation 1 and 2 :

Equation 1 + 2 

 x + y = 49  (+)

2x - y = 8

----------------------

3x = 57

x = 57/3

x = 19

So Ram's age is 19 years

The correct option is 3).19
