Given that, two pipes P and Q can fill a tank in 2.5 hours and 4 hours resp.

∴ Efficiency of pipe 1 = 1/2.5 = 2/5 and that of pipe 2 = 1/4

Let x be the time after which pipe 1 should be closed.

According to the question, total work done by both the pipes

⇒ (1/4 × 2) + (2/5 × x) = 1

⇒ 2x/5 = 1/2

⇒ x = 1.25 hours

⇒ Time required = 1 hr 15 min
