Two pipes A and B fill a tank in 4 hours and 6 hours respectively while pipe C empties the tank in 8 hours. If all the pipes A, B and C are started together simultaneously then in how much time will the tank be full?

In one hour, pipe A fills the tank = 1/4 part

In one hour, pipe B fills the tank = 1/6 part

In one hour, pipe C empties the tank = 1/8 part

So, in one hour, all the pipes A, B and C fill the tank = 1/4 + 1/6 – 1/8 = (6 + 4 – 3)/24 = 7/24 part

∴ The tank will be full in 24/7 hours.
