The sentences suggest that the blank should contain a word that means 'an exchange of goods for each other', so 'currency' is eliminated. Binder and higher also are irrelevant. Monopoly and barter are both viable options; but since monopoly means sole control, which does not make sense in terms of the second sentence. So, only barter, which means exchanging one thing for another, is the correct choice here.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 2.
