If the age of Rahul is 5 years more than his friend Ajay's age and the age of Rahul's wife is 6 years less than Rahul, and Ajay's wife is 1 year older than Rahul's wife, then which of the following statements is true?
1). Rahul's age and Ajay's wife's age is same.
2). Ajay's wife's age and Ajay's age is same.
3). Rahul and Ajay are of the same age.
4). Rahul and Ajay's age difference is 3 years.
Solution :
Let us take Rahul's age as 'x' and his wife's age as 'y'.
Let Ajay's age be 'a' and his wife's age be 'b'.
Given:
Rahul is 5 years older than Ajay
x = 5 + a ---------> 1
Rahul's wife is 6 years younger than him
y = x - 6 -----------> 2
Ajay's wife is 1 year older than Rahul's wife
b = y + 1 ---------> 3
If we look at the three relationships we have a relation between x and y , x and a but not between x and b. By substituting eqn 2 in 1 we get the relation between x and b,
Substituting 2 in 1 ,
b = x - 6 + 1
b = x - 5 ----------> 4
For getting relation between y and a, substitute eqn 1 in 2
y = 5 + a - 6
y = a - 1 -----------> 5
For getting relation between a and b, substitute eqn 3 in 5
b - 1 = a - 1
a = b
So by this we can conclude that Ajay's age and Ajay's wife's age are the same .
